The Familiar World of Fiep Westendorp

Jip and Janneke, Pluk van de Petteflet, Floddertje… chances are you’ll immediately picture one of Fiep’s famous drawings! You can recognize her drawings by their distinctive lines, funny poses, and unique little faces: characters that really come to life.

Her illustrations are cheerful and playful. Fiep had an eye for small, everyday moments and knew exactly how to bring characters to life—whether they were children, adults, or animals. Perhaps that’s why her drawings still feel so familiar so many years later. For some, they’re pure nostalgia; for the next generation, they’re new stories to discover.

About Fiep Westendorp

Fiep Westendorp was born in Zaltbommel in 1916 and knew from a young age that she wanted to become an illustrator. After completing her art training, she began illustrating for books, newspapers, and magazines. In 1952, her famous collaboration with Annie M.G. Schmidt began for *Het Parool*. There, Fiep gave Jip and Janneke their distinctive looks and later drew beloved characters such as Pluk van de Petteflet, Floddertje, and Otje. And Fiep drew a lot! During her long career, she created thousands of illustrations and worked on more than two hundred books. Her work has become an integral part of Dutch illustration history. Her iconic work has now rightfully become part of Dutch cultural heritage.

Fiep Westendorp on a StoryTile

Early in StoryTiles’ history, the brand had the opportunity to design tiles featuring its illustrations. Fiep’s iconic characters come to life on ceramic tiles with a StoryTiles twist. The new 2026 Fiep collection incorporates authentic Delft Blue elements. Fiep Westendorp is deeply beloved, and this is reflected in the responses to Fiep Westendorp StoryTiles. We are therefore delighted and proud to have had the opportunity to create a new chapter of Fiep tiles in 2026. Familiar illustrations, nostalgia, and memories, along with new designs, are once again finding a beautiful place in homes.
